An Interview With Fox Violet | UDS Interviews

FOX VIOLET-Trenches

Check out our recent interview with Thea Juliette, the creative mind behind indie rock project – Fox Violet!

For the unfortunate few who don’t know who you are, would you mind introducing yourselves?

Fox Violet: Absolutely! Hi, my name is Thea Juliette and I am in an LA based project called Fox Violet. Fox Violet is an ambient indie rock project with elements of dark pop and soul mixed in. Songs explore dreamscapes, the unconscious and parallel worlds.

In the effort of getting to know each other better – if you could be a sandwich, what sandwich would you be?

Fox Violet: I love this! PB&J, sweet and crunchy too! I think the music has this sweet salty experience but has something you don’t expect.

Tell us about your latest release…

Fox Violet: I’ll Take Your Pain, has just come out. This song is very personal to me, it’s really about the dissolution of a relationship that you’re remembering through a lucid dreamscape, sometime in some distant future. In dreams, things become confused and don’t make sense. I think relationship breakdowns always have this lack of clarity over what went wrong, why it went wrong, mixed in with this ache of nostalgia. It’s upon reflection that we tend to place the blame. I wanted to explore these themes through the feeling of sense, through the feeling of not being able to breathe, as that’s what it feels like when a relationship falls apart. It’s something important to my process, to feel like my body is processing an emotion, in a way.

Have you got any crazy live show stories you can share with the world?

Fox Violet: The crazy wonder lies in people really responding to the music. When a stranger approaches me after a set to tell me that they loved the music, that means absolutely everything to me. I feel this especially because my music isn’t mainstream, more underground. I prefer it to be a stranger than someone whom I know as it just sticks with you and feels so much more real, raw and powerful. Connection is weird, wonderful and crazy; it’s a striking experience to really connect with people in this manner and have them understand you somehow. It’s something of a transformative and ethereal experience, you feel a deep sense of gratification. I also love it when I look out into the crowd and see people’s heads moving to the beat.

Here at Upside Down Shark we discuss a wide breadth of pop-culture, including music, movies, TV, video games and the like. So with that in mind, if you could have a track featured in anything, what would it be?

Fox Violet: It would make me incredibly excited to have a song (even just instrumentals) in a show like Westworld, which is currently my favorite show. My music is dark and foreboding, so shows and movies that fit this dynamic would be absolutely perfect.

Name one thing on your music bucket list

Fox Violet: To play Glastonbury and be on the BBC live lounge!

What would be your inspirational quote to share with the world?

Fox Violet: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Gandhi

What does 2020 have in store for you?

Fox Violet: This year is my collaboration year. It’s when I plan on writing with other artists and pushing my producer capabilities as far as I can. I want to really challenge myself musically and write in a vast array of styles.

What’s your favourite shark?

Fox Violet: I actually think Bonnetheads sharks are very pretty and they don’t eat meat. We need to be more careful to protect sharks. They have a bad rep because of Jaws but they are just trying to survive, like us.
