Check out our interview with Canadian slam metal noise merchants Bitter…
Montreal slamming beatdown deathcore band Bitter join UDS to talk about their crushing new EP Slamosaurus Rex, their love of ridiculously heavy music, dinosaurs, video games and what comes next for one of Quebec’s most exciting new extreme metal bands.
We caught up with Yan from Bitter ahead of the release of Slamosaurus Rex on September 1st, an EP packed with slamming grooves, violent riffs, guttural vocals and monstrous breakdowns. Taking influence from bands including Xenotheory, Kanine and The Acacia Strain, Bitter have created something unapologetically heavy, but with a prehistoric concept and sense of humour that makes them stand out from the crowd.
Yan tells us how an image of someone moshing in an inflatable dinosaur costume somehow evolved into an entire dinosaur-themed EP, complete with its own artwork and comic book, and why the band decided that if they were going to embrace dinosaurs, they were going to go all in.
We also talk about Yan’s career working in AAA video games and how game design has influenced the way he approaches Bitter as a creative project, what it’s like being in a band alongside his son, the importance of Montreal and Quebec’s alternative music community, and the upcoming Shelter Fest, which is raising money to support people experiencing homelessness.
Plus, we discuss the possibility of Bitter eventually making their way over to the UK, the new music they’re already working on, which Bitter track would make the perfect video game boss-fight soundtrack and, naturally, Yan answers the most important question of all: what’s his favourite shark?
If you’re into slam, deathcore, beatdown hardcore or extreme metal, you need Bitter on your radar.
