Check out our recent interview with Kingston’s finest – Monach!
For the unfortunate few who don’t know who you are, would you mind introducing yourselves?
Monach: We’re Monach! The band was formed in early 2018 under a different name, unfortunately later on we realised that name was being used by a couple other bands, and so to avoid legal issues we switched to the current name in late 2019. The lineup has also changed quite a bit, but the current lineup was finalised in January! We’re an odd bunch of musicians creating the music we want to hear and play!
In the effort of getting know each other better – if you could be a sandwich, what sandwich would you be?
Monach: Do burritos count? We’d be a burrito stuffed with a whole bunch of stuff. We try to keep it spicy & not put walls around our sound. If it has to be a sandwich then just toss some buns around that bad boy. Why not?
Tell us about your latest release…
Monach: We released our debut album Duner back in September! Some of the songs on it were written prior to the band forming, so there’s some songs that are a couple years old now, about partying, relationships and whatnot. There’s also a lot of new stuff on there that’s aimed more at the mental health side of things, kind of points towards the direction of the stuff we’re writing now.
Have you been touring in support of Duner?
Monach: We’ve actually just planned our first run in support of the album all around the province. We’re heading out in April with our friends in Listen Up Kid, and we’re really excited about it. We anticipate things are going to get really weird. So I guess the tour has been amazing so far!
Have you got any crazy tour stories you can share with the world?
Monach: This upcoming run is our first as Monach, so those are yet to happen, guess you’ll just have to have us back.
Here at Upside Down Shark we discuss a wide breadth of pop-culture, including music, movies, TV, video games and the like. So with that in mind, if you could have a track featured in anything, whether it be any of the above on even a wrestling theme, what would it be?
Monach: If it was 2002 & the Tony Hawk games were still good & relevant, then I feel like that’d be the answer. I want someone to kickflip and face plant to the tune of ‘Everything’s Alright’.
Name one thing on your band bucket list…
Monach: Touring the world and getting to play in, and experience as many countries as we can together, and getting to share our music with people everywhere. It’s a small checkmark on the bucket list, I know, but it’ll be worth it trust me.
What would be your inspirational quote to share with the world?
Monach: I actually just heard one this morning in an interview with Ed O’Brien that struck me real well. It was “You’re capable of extraordinary things, be great. ‘Cause you can be great. But that involves work, focus, and feeling true. But you can be great, so good luck”.
What does 2020 have in store for you?
Monach: A run in April, likely another in the summer. At least one more release but hopefully more than that. We’re pushing really hard to make 2020 the year we get our feet moving and get our name out there. Honestly week by week we change what we have in store because everyone keeps coming up with great ideas.
Name your favourite shark (can be real or fictional)
Monach: Those Gameshark things on N64 that give you all the cheat codes.
