Check out our recent interview with Chinese electronic innovator – DiipSilence!
For the unfortunate few who don’t know who you are, would you mind introducing yourselves?
DiipSilence: Hey! This is DiipSilence, I’m a solo Chinese electronic artist-producer based in LA. “DiipSilence” originates from my Chinese name, which means deep and silent. As a noise-maker and quiet-dreamer, “DiipSilence” also represents my lifestyle of living in our inner tranquility while keep making noise.
In the effort of getting to know each other better – if you could be a sandwich, what sandwich would you be?
DiipSilence: I would be a multi-layer jumbo sandwich, avocado, barbeque-beef tongue, swiss cheese, variety of fresh veggies, freaking spicy peppers, and honey-mustard lol. I’d say it’s a jungle jumbo sandwich! Same in writing music, I use different flavours of instruments like Chinese ethnic instruments, field recordings, foleys, as well as electronic software synth, modular synth, etc.
Tell us about your latest release…
DiipSilence: My new release is called the Reticent Path, it’s a 6-song EP that collects acoustic instrumental tracks that I’ve written in the past few years, and that’s where the reticent path came from. I always dreamt about a place that no one would need language to communicate with each other, all information can be expressed and received by our conscious. This idea expands in this EP, for instance, not only a human being but also an isle, the ocean, the mist, and even the forest has its own voice. In this reticent realm, everything can interact and feel their emotions without knowing any language.
Have you got any crazy tour stories you can share with the world?
DiipSilence: No, I haven’t. Sorry to reply with this unexpected answer, I do not intend to answer it in this way. I just had some live shows locally, without many CRAZY tour stories. I have to answer your question honestly, and this is the true me. I don’t want to make something not exciting and create a fake crazy tour story. Most of the time, I live in my small “cave” to enjoy the creating time alone. I guess an exciting moment was somebody listened to my music, they loved it and asked me to compose for their film.
Here at Upside Down Shark we discuss a wide breadth of pop-culture, including music, movies, TV, video games and the like. So with that in mind, if you could have a track featured in anything, whether it be any of the above on even a wrestling theme, what would it be?
DiipSilence: I’d love to have my track featured in a thriller anime film. I’m a die-hard anime fan! If there’s any chance that my music being featured in anime like Satoshi Kon’s “Paprika,” that’s like a dream to come true.
Name one thing on your band bucket list
DiipSilence: Travel to the North Pole and make field recording, create an album purely from the sounds there!
What would be your inspirational quote to share with the world?
DiipSilence: Anything can be music.
I believe any noise can be made into music. Throwing a stone into the water, import the sound into a wavetable synth, you can make it either a plucked instrument or a lead synth. A rumble of thunder can be a sub-bass track; hey even a burp sound can be transformed into something really cool.
What does 2020 have in store for you?
DiipSilence: Keep creating, keep improving, keep thinking. Stay curious, stay genuine, stay humble. I’ll release at least two songs during each month, so stay tuned on my website diipsilence.com!
What’s your favourite shark?
DiipSilence: Massive Attack, Björk, Sigur Rós.
